The film is based on the Boom! Studios' comic "Malignant Man", co-created by Wan. Zak Olkewicz wrote the script for the adaptation. The story focuses on a patient dying of a terminal disease. He discovers that his malignant tumor is a mysterious alien parasite.
He is assigned to battle a secret army. Thomas also directed 2012's "Electrick Children". She is also directing a live-action "The Little Mermaid" reboot and adapting "Looking for Alaska".
