Vancouver-style extradosed bridge at Durgam Cheruvu. What if a bridge like Golden Ears Bridge in Vancouver, is constructed in the city? This is going to be a reality in a few years, at Durgam Cheruvu.
• Rs 250 cr is the estimated budget for construction
• Officials claim that the project would create a new impetus for tourism

What if a bridge like Golden Ears Bridge in Vancouver, is constructed in the city? This is going to be a reality in a few years, at Durgam Cheruvu. The project is a collaborative venture by the Greater Hyderabad Metropolitan Corporation (GHMC), Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA), Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (APIIC) and AP Tourism department.
The initial estimate for the project is Rs 250 crore. A senior official with HMDA said that the bridge would link Ambedkar University to Inorbit Mall, Hi-tec City. It would be 350 metres long with six lanes roads system and would have the capacity of 700 PCU (Per hour car units).
GHMC officials feel that this bridge would offer a lasting solution to the traffic woes on Jubilee Hills Road No. 36.
With regard to this, a Detailed Project Report (DPR) was done by Rail India Techno Economic Services (RITES); and now, with the acceptance of the civic bodies, they are ready to put forward the proposal to the government for approval. “We are confident that this bridge would serve a dual purpose that is easing traffic and attracting more tourists to the city,” shared the official from GHMC.
RITES estimated that the basic cost of the project would be Rs 250 crore which can go up if the land acquisition costs are added. “RITES studied four types of bridges which were cable stayed, girder, suspension and arch bridge and suggested a combination of girder and cable stayed bridge, which is also known as extradosed bridge,” said an APIIC official. RITES estimated that it would cost Rs 60 crore to provide approach roads to the bridge. While the basic cost of the cable stayed bridge would be Rs 181 crore, it would be Rs 240 cr for the girder bridge and Rs 223 cr for a suspension bridge.
The famous Golden Ears Bridge in Vancouver, Canada, is an extradosed bridge. In India, Gujarat proposed the longest extradosed bridge across the Narmada. The cost of the 1.44 km bridge is estimated at Rs 650 crore. The first extradosed bridge in India was built for the Delhi Metro between Pragati Maidan and Indraprastha.
An official with AP Tourism department said that along with the extradosed bridge, with a budget of 50 crore, Balkam Cheruvu and Ibrahim Cheruvu would be developed as lake parks. The lake parks would have rope ways, boating, scenic views, lightings, and refreshment kiosks.
