Adilabad: The week-long Nagoba Jatara, which drives away the darkness of Amavasya and ushers in Punnami Velugu, was launched in Keslapur village of Indervelli mandal on Friday midnight by the Mesram community elders.

They performed the ‘mahapuja’ in a brightly illuminated Nagoba temple. Girijans from Maharashtra, Chattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh attended.

The girijans rendered ‘kirtanas’ to the accompaniment of music in praise of Nagoba, who is treated as their beloved God, before performing the puja. They used the Godavari water.

Among those present were District Collector Buddha Prakash Jyoti and Mancherial Collector and ITDA In-charge Project Officer A R Karnan.

The Collector told The Hans India that all arrangements, including supply of drinking water and transport for the jatara have been completed for the benefit of devotees.

He said the girijan durbar would be conducted on January 30. Jyoti said a speciality of the jatara this year was a food show reflecting the traditional girijan culture. Wi-fi facilities were also being provided.
