Luxettipet: A proposal to start a petrol filling station on the outskirts of the town has been submitted to the department, Sub-jailor Ganesh told The Hans India. He said the station would be operated by the inmates of the local sub-jail and is awaiting the approval of the department.

He called upon voluntary organisations and enthusiastic persons to offer their services for the benefit of the prisoners. If they come forward with offers they would be taken to the notice of higher officials, he said.

Ganesh said that several programmes like ‘Akshara Jyoti’ (literacy), daily yoga classes, focus on sanitation and launch of a mini-library are taken up on the premises to bring about a change in the behaviour pattern of prisoners. Thanks to sanitation and ushering in of green cover, the prison, with 40 inmates, has become famous for cleanliness. There are several flowering plants on the premises which are protected by prisoners. The staff focuses on clean latrines and surroundings.

The prison has a high compound wall which is not easily scalable. A judge lives next door, adjacent to which is a court. The inmates have TV facility in four rooms set apart for them, along with a mini-library with books on Ramayana, Mahabharatha, Bhagavatam, Bible and Quran, besides 200 books, periodicals, and daily newspapers.

The sub-jail arranges free legal services for the benefit of those who can’t afford to present their cases in courts. Weekly medical tests are conducted by doctors and medicines are arranged for the prisoners. Better treatment is provided to those with serious ailments, with the permission of the higher authorities.

A psychologist offers training to the inmates for easing their stress and tensions. Every Sunday spiritual classes are conducted by the Satya Sai Seva Samiti.
