Kothagudem: District Collector Rajiv Gandhi Hanumanthu has exhorted the government employees to sensitise people and encourage them to build individual sanitary latrines (ISLs), otherwise the budgeted funds for the Swachh Bharat Mission amounting to Rs 130 crore would go waste. He called upon the government servants to ensure people’s participation in government programmes.

Reviewing implementation of various development programmes with officials in a meeting held at Collectorate here on Wednesday, Hanumanthu said the Khammam district reached 82 per cent of the target for ISLs, while Bhadradri-Kothagudem district was only at 42 per cent.

To speed up execution of construction of ISLs, celebration of the Swachhta Week commenced from Wednesday.

He wanted the officials to raise the issues of spread of epidemics during rainy season, environmental pollution, self-respect of women and other issues with beneficiaries and sensitise them to take initiative towards construction of toilets.

A district-level workshop would be conducted with the participation of officials from grassroots level to that of district level, the Collector added, stating that elected people’s representatives with a resource person from Hyderabad would take part in the workshop to be conducted on August 23.

Stating that the district has completed 70 per cent of the plantation drive, Hanumanthu directed the officials and elected people’s representatives to work with coordination for 100 per cent implementation of Haritha Haram.

“A team of officials arrived here to inspect the plantation drive progress expressed satisfaction at the geo-tagging of the saplings planted on either side of the Ramagiri road,” the Collector informed.

He asked the officials to distribute teak plants to people at their door step and encourage them to plant the teak sapling along with other fruit varieties rich in Vitamin C.

Talking about the spread of epidemics, the Collector said there should not be water stagnation in the villages. “There is no dearth of supply of bleaching powder and other chemicals,” he said, asking the officials to tour villages for about three months. He warned of taking stringent action against the government servants neglecting their duty and asked the MPDOs to review the progress of works.

District Rural Development Officer Jagat Kumar Reddy said of the targeted 2,19,260 toilets to be built, only 1,14,211 were built so far. Under the NREGS and Swachh Bharat programme, 66,548 toilets were sanctioned. Out of them only, 12,000 could be completed and 9,114 were in various stages of construction.
