The Nexus 5 is now on sale in the Google Play Store unlocked for $349 (16GB) or $399 (32GB)in both black and white, and it’s running the brand new Android 4.4 KitKat, which will also be rolling out to the Nexus 4, 7, 10, and Galaxy S4 and HTC One Google Play Edition devices “in the coming weeks.”
Built by LG, the Nexus 5 has a soft-touch backing much like the Nexus 7, and it measures 8.59mm thin and 130g in weight, making it just slightly thinner and lighter than its predecessor, the Nexus 4. It has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor with an Adreno 330 for graphics, 2GB of RAM, a 5-inch 1080p display made of Gorilla Glass 3, a non-removable 2300mAh battery, 4G LTE support, and an 8MP rear-facing camera with Optical Image Stabilization.
As for the software, a slew of changes are in store for Android users this time around — far more than were announced with Android 4.3. For starters, the default launcher is now called Google Experience, and it allows for the user to begin a search at anytime by saying “OK, Google.”
The navigation and status bars are now transparent, allowing your wallpaper and apps to take up the whole screen, and books and movies now automatically display in full screen.
RAM usage has been greatly improved, according to Google, allowing for much faster multitasking and the ability for 4.4 to run on low-end devices with as little as 512MB of RAM.
And the phone app has been updated to include better caller ID and prioritized contacts. Android 4.4 is so chock full of new features.
