Now, there aren’t any parki trees or fruits.

Problems

G Balaswamy, member of Save Our Urban Lakes (SOUL), said, “The lake and its buffer zone has been subject to massive encroachments in the past few years. It has now reduced in size due to the neglect of the then government, which had sanctioned various construction activities, violating the guidelines of the Supreme Court. Many an unauthorised borewell has come up in the lake bed and its buffer zones. Water is being sold, without permission from the civic bodies. Many new buildings have also come up.”

He appealed to the State government to make an enquiry and remove illegal structures from the lake and prevent further constructions. Y Narasimha Reddy, mandal revenue officer, Balanagar, said, “On the strength of complaints received from the local residents, we conducted raids recently on the illegal digging of borewells near the lake. When the seizing work was in progress, the local MLA, Arekapudi Gandhi, intervened and stopped us.

The matter was reported to the district collector, who advised us to take action on the illegal borewell vendors with the support of local police.” He added that a written letter had been sent to the West Zone Police Commissioner seeking police protection while taking up the removal of illegal borewells. They are still waiting for a reply from the police before taking further action.
