Chanchalguda: The Prisons Department started Vidyadanam programme for rescued beggars residing at Anand Ashram in Chanchalguda and Cherlapally.Beggars inhabiting in Anand Ashram at Chanchalguda are getting all kinds of support from the officials of Prisons Department. The officials said the drive to rescue beggars was not a short-term plan or event specific, but is a long-term plan.

The beggars are provided will training in different skills and eventually will be employed based on their skill development. Prisons department is already running a Petrol Bunk near Chanchalguda jail where former prison inmates are employed.

Director General of Prisons V K Singh said six more petrol pumps would be started in the coming days besides, six Ayurvedic villages will be initiated where skilled beggars would be accommodated as employees.

He said 741 mage beggars and 311 female beggars were registered at Anand Ashrams of which 476 male beggars and 241 female beggars were released on their personal undertaking of not resorting to begging again.

He said arrangement would be made for beggar families soon and they would be provided wholesome life in order to discourage begging in Telangana. He said Rs 500 would be paid to the people who give information about location of beggars.

The initiative actually started in the month of October this year and dozens of beggars were picked up from different parts of the city and confined at Anand Ashram where they were given food and shelter.

In some cases, family members of the beggars came to take them back home. However, after taking care of beggars for few months, Prisons Department is embarking upon a comprehensive plan to make permanent arrangements of their rehabilitation.
