Recollecting early days, Mohammed says, “We started by selling products in boxes called phetti in local parlance. We would run when we spotted a policeman. Those were early days but still customers would come to us as we brought imported goods that were not available in the city.” Since 1960 the market came to be known for imported suiting, shirting, clothing, cosmetics, electronic items, baby products, milk powder, Tang cold drink powder, burqa, perfumes etc.
Ghouse Quadri an owner of Classic Cloth store which started in 1985 said the market is famous worldwide and people who go the Middle East too spread the word and they make it a point to come here when they are in the city.
Shahran market is popular for clothes like K.T, Bozgi, meti, dhoob chau, Net, China silk, and lungis. A number of politicians too visit the market. Imported material from Japan is sought after and the price per meter starts from Rs 200- to 2500. Net is another item which is imported from Saudi Arabia and UAE colours with zari embroidery work is popular among women.
Lungis brands like Botal, Java, Altas are imported from Indonesia start from Rs 400 to Rs 25,000/- per piece. Maqbool Ahmed owner of Sana Gifts and Novelties said that the shop is in existence from 1988 a shop is of imported comestics, electronic items, baby products and perfumes.
Mohammed a onwer of Dubai Burqa Collection said that the shops is since 15 years, in which Burqas, Abhayas, are imported from Dubai. Burqa like NADA which is made in Dubai and Firdous which is made in Korea are popular.
This imported Burqa and Abhayas is available in plain are starting from 1500 and work embroidery and designers are starting from 2500/- to 8000 Burqas Abhayas are totally made in UAE. Many young girls and college students prefer this Dubai Burqa.
