Adopted by the UN General Assembly, World Humanitarian Day specifically was chosen to coincide with the anniversary of the bombing of the United Nations headquarters in Baghdad, Iraq, in 2003 which killed 22 staff members.

The World Health organisation (WHO) is initiating a campaign as part of the UN observance to focus on healthcare workers who constantly are under service in difficult circumstances such as conflicts, natural disaster or resourceless settings. The keywords #WorldHumanitarianDay and #Sharehumanity have been trending on Twitter on the occasion of the World Humanitarian Day.
Around 2,000 students from the Ashok Hall School in Kolkata observed the day by staging a rally to protest oppression of women.
