BENGALURU: On Thursday Rakesh Chawat, the proprietor of Sri Pooja Jewellers in KG Halli, had alleged that a woman who was about 40-years-old had stolen a gold chain worth Rs 1,50,000 from the shop and when he went to the Gangamma Gudi Police Station with the CCTV footage the next day, they refused to file a First Information Report (FIR).

The woman had reportedly walked into the store at 9.15pm She was the last customer as the store downs its shutters at 9:30 PM. She told the staff that she wanted to sell her old gold chain and purchase a new one. The staff brought the boxes of jewellery so she could pick the style she liked.

Chawat alleged that, “She asked one of the staff to weigh her old chain and quote a price. She asked another girl to show her a selection of new gold chains. She selected one and asked the girl to try it on so that she could see how it looks. While the girl was trying it on, she quickly stole a mangalsutra weighing 40.64 grams, worth Rs 1.5 lakh. She slid it out of a box and put it in her hand bag. The staff didn’t have a clue that she had diverted their attention.”

The first employee came back to tell her that her chain would fetch Rs 40,000. The woman said she wanted Rs 45,000, which the store staff said was not feasible. She told them that she was not ready to sell her jewellery at such a low price and walked out of the store.

The staff realised when they were closing the store for the day, that the mangalsutra was missing. By then it was too late. They identified through the footage of the CCTV installed in the store that it was the woman.

The police did not file the complaint and said that they will investigate the issue instead. “I showed the police the CCTV footage and when I wanted to lodge an FIR, it wasn’t taken. They said that it is under investigation.”
