Inspiring Officer, Motivational Speaker. I remember telling the officer this was not the best way of dealing with it. I don't like distinctions based on gender,” says Dr Sultana.

Fighting against all odds and coming up triumphant has been Major Dr Sultana Khan’s story. Born in a conservative family, her parents did not want to send her to school; today she is an inspiration to over two hundred girl cadets of four wings of NCC: Army, Navy, R and V regiment since 1995. A lecturer at Anwar ul loom college, she has been a source of encouragement to thousands of students.

Combative and not one to buckle under pressure she fought her way up the ladder. From almost losing her position in NCC for spending much time at the Officer Training Corps to being mocked at for taking up so-called ‘men only’ jobs she has had to tackle taboo and stereotype to emerge and prove herself.

She joined NCC as a 2ndlieutenant and now is a Major and a commanding officer to two hundred girl cadets.
"In situations where men and women were guilty of the same offence, some officers would award the woman a soft punishment. It comprehensively undermined the credibility of women.
I remember telling the officer this was not the best way of dealing with it. I don't like distinctions based on gender,” says Dr Sultana.
A woman who excels both on the field as well as the desk, she was honoured with several awards, including an award for scoring highest in English literature. She is also a strong voice on atrocities against women and campaigns on the evils of alcohol and for stricter legislation. Child labour and womens issues are close to her heart.
Dr Sultana Khan feels that the top talent is reluctant to join the ranks of NCC. She feels sad that quality of our cadets is good but the best students often give NCC a miss. She analyses the NCC had big plans for improving cadet training, terming this a change in philosophy.
She highlights the achievements of NCC in nation building, social awareness, community development, environment protection, women empowerment, sports and adventure.
