It is unfortunate that the High Court rapped the state government over the non-implementation of the Supreme Court verdict on the dispute between the Orthodox and the Jacobite factions of the Malankara Orthodox Church over the administrative control of Piravom Church. Though the two issues (Piravom Church issue and the Sabarimala issue) would seem to be the Tweedledum and Tweedledee, there is a stark difference in its essence and entirety.

So it can not be attributed that the state government was hasty in implementing the Supreme Court verdict on Sabarimala. While the Sabarimala issue is all about the fundamental question of an individual’s freedom, the Piravom is all about an internal issue within the community. So the state government cannot be a sitting duck to pass the buck on these issues. - T K Nandanan, Kochi
