Hyderabad: With the last date for Rajya Sabha elections fast approaching, Congress and TDP are busy finalising the names of the official candidates. While the Congress high command is likely to announce the names of the candidates on Monday, the Seemandhra leaders continue to claim that they will field one or two candidates. It remains to be seen how serious they are as so far they have not been able to zero in on any consensus candidate. Both J C Diwakar Reddy and Chaitanya Raju claim that they are in the fray.
On the other hand, many Seemandhra MLAs say that if the high command decides to renominate K VP Ramachandra Rao, they will support him. It is still not clear whether Congress would contest all the four seats or would put up candidates for three seats and support TRS for the fourth one. Sources in the party say that the party might decide to put up candidates for three seats and transfer balance votes to TRS for the fourth seat in view of the vertical divide in the party over the T issue. The major opposition party TDP is engaged in a marathon exercise to pick up two candidates.
The TDP politburo met here on Monday to finalise the names of the candidates. Of the six vacant seats, TDP would win two on its own. Naidu is making all efforts to see that there would be no revolt or cross voting in the party. Though no official announcement has been made, sources said that party senior leader Garikipati Mohan Rao is the front-runner from Telangana.
Following internal squabbles in the party in Nalgonda district after the party senior leader M Narasimhulu’s name figured prominently as one of the strong contenders, Naidu is said to be having second thoughts about him. It may be mentioned here that Uma Madhav Reddy, also from Nalgonda, expressed her desire to contest for Rajya Sabha. From seemandhra region, names of senior leaders Ch Ramachandra Rao and Ch Sambasiva Rao from Kapu Community and former Speaker K Pratibha Bharati, former Minister J R Pushparaj and West Godavari district party unit President T Sitamahalaxmi figured in the meeting.
