When a baby is born, a small scratch on her skin gives her parents sleepless nights. Then to rape a 2 month old, have we become a nation of retards with a silent psychological epidemic spreading in every corner.

The stories were horrific to throw a human being on the road, to put iron nails in her private parts, to cut out her tongue, can only be done in a society that is crumbling from inside. People have become wary of sending their children to study in metros, what is it the point of such education that comes at such a high stake of no personal security.

A change is required from the grass root level and it can be started by educating the mother. An educated mother will treat her daughter and son as one. She will be a role model for him to respect his sister as an independent entity and not as a machine for giving birth.

Only when we will educate our sons, brothers and husbands will they start treating the women at home and around with respect. All this talk of self defense, self respect and to stand up for justice, makes no sense to women living in rural India, who are at the mercy of men for their existence.

This change will take time, it will not happen overnight, but we all need to wake up our consciences and reach a consensus to do something about it, today.
