Kozhikode: Calicut University plans to use blockchain technology for digital certification and validation of academic certificates and mark lists. This plan will also enable the stakeholders to validate the authenticity of digital copies of degree certificates using the blockchain technology.

Officials said this technology was a key component of the ambitious ‘Total Digital University Solution’ project to be implemented with UL Technology Solutions (ULTS) as technology partner.

Dr Lajish VL, Head of Computer Science Department, said “ They have asked ULTS to prepare a comprehensive digital master plan for the varsity. Blockchain is a major technology adoption that varsity will be making under the initiative”. The varsity hopes to implement the project in a year after getting the approval from the Government.

Syndicate members and Vrsity IT experts had met higher education minister K T Jaleel to make a presentation of this project. Syndicate member K K Haneefa said that government would issue a special order to enable the varsity engage ULTS as technology solution provider.

The authorities also mentioned that it will be the easiest way to track down the fake certificates issues and it will also help the third parties including employers, to validate the genuineness of the academic records, Dr Lajish VL, Director of CUCC.

Kerala has already taken several initiatives to harness the technology for capacity building initiatives, including setting up Blockchain Academy. Development and Innovation Strategic council have also announced plans to utilize the technology to streamline purchase.
