The Indian services (Army, Air force and Navy) are most efficient and well trained organisations meant for the defence of the country. In India the only sector left without reservations is service officers and the selection purely based on the merit and sheer physical and mental fineness of the person. Despite being the efficient and most respected organisation, the importance of the services have remained unattractive when compared to the civil services (IAS & IPS etc), a situation established by the Indian government from the rule of first prime minister Mr. Jawaharlal Nehru down to present dispensation.
Instead of respecting such a vital service organisation the civil administration at the centre systematically diluted its importance with unattractive pays and pension schemes, hence youth are not attracted to service jobs and are craving for civil services. Just compare the luxury of working as IAS,IPS officers, once one gets through the UPSC preliminary and final exams and face interview, IAS man becomes deputy secretary and the IPS officer an Asst. SP and for them reaching top rung of position is easy, they need not prove anything and are spared from passing annual physical tests and qualification exams and easily occupy top position before retirement.Unlike in the west, the soldier in India paid less where as in America, England and Russia, the soldiers are paid high salaries and their families are taken care by the governments and the top positioned persons sons prefer to work as soldier in the army.
How many of our politicians’ sons worked or prefer to work in army? Unless the defence services are made attractive, youth never consider the service sector as career option and the number of officers’ shortage continues to mount in Army, Navy and Air force. Now it is high time for the government to highlight the importance of the soldier jobs and make the youth opt for them or else in future the country defending forces strength will further reduce and the very countries safety and security will be at risk.
To put it in nut shell our country’s policy is such we need blue blood with low salaries and high risk to protect the country and black blood (not all) to dictate terms to them and devour the riches of country in the form of politicians and risk free rosy and cosy civilian jobs. Unless the trend is changed, I am afraid the youth of this mighty country may shun the unattractive service sector for comfortable and attractive Civil services.
