Khammam: In two major upsets the defending champions in both men and women were shown the door by feisty opponents to ring in a new ball badminton equation. The dominance of Telangana State men and Tamil Nadu women came to an end when Indian Railway and Karnataka scripted fairytale climax to their respective campaigns in the 61st Senior National Ball Badminton tournament at Pavilion Ground here on Thursday.

In the men championship clash, Telangana did well to bounce back into contention after the railway outfit took a 2-0 lead. Displaying guts and ideal match-temperament, they started serving and hitting it right to gain points and stay in contention. The host bowed out with guns blazing, though they squandered in the crucial stages of the decider to lose 2-3.

Meanwhile, the seven-title win-steak of Tamil Nadu women ended on a disappointing note when the champion was dethroned by a resurgent Karnataka bunch in the finals. To the large number of spectators, who turned up for the grand finale, it was worth a final because the cliff-hanger was tantalising from start to finish.

The eventual champion, displaying match-temperament in the crunch situations, managed to eke out a narrow 3-2 win. Earlier, in the semifinals, Tamil Nadu posted a facile 2-0 win over Kerala while Karnataka brought the curtains down on Andhra Pradesh campaign with an identical margin.
In the men semifinals, Telangana State defeated Maharashtra 2-0 which was emulated by Indian Railway against Andhra Pradesh.
