Hyderabad: The Telangana Government has decided to accord top priority to Irrigation sector in its budget and will allocate lion’s share for speedy completion of all ongoing irrigation projects in the state.

Since the budget 2014 will be only for a period of six months, the Irrigation Department has sought about Rs 7,548 crore for irrigation. It proposes to utilise about Rs 2000 crore for all the ongoing projects in Mahabubnagar district.

The Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao on Wednesday held discussions with the Finance Minister Etela Rajender.

According to sources, the Department of Irrigation wanted to utilise Rs 900 crore for restoration of lakes. For Nagarjuna Sagar renovation works, it proposed to spend about Rs 40 crores and for Srisailam Left Canal (SLBC) project Rs 300 crore.

The government also proposes to spend Rs 100 crore for Sriram Sagar project and Rs 400 crore for Devadula project. For projects like Yellampally which is in final stages the department proposes to spend Rs 500 crores. For the prestigious project of Pranahita Chevella, it proposes to allocate Rs 2000 crore.

The officials who attended the meeting on Wednesday along with the Ministers, told The Hans India that the process of finalisation was underway. "We put forward the proposals and they are now with the Finance Department,” the officials said.
