Warangal: Jubilant festivities across the district marked the first New Year celebrations held in separate Telangana state on Thursday.

People from different walks of life and all age groups have participated in celebrations organised to welcome the New Year 2015. Common people, government officials, students and youth have spent their time in revelry during midnight hours on Wednesday and the celebrations continued on Thursday also.

With ‘Mukkoti Ekadasi’ falling on New Year day, devotees thronged historic Sri Rudreshwara Swamy Thousand Pillar Temple, Bhadrakali Temple, Sri Shirdi Sai Temple at Balasamudram, Siddeshwara Swamy Temple, Sri Venkateshwara Swamy Temple at Excise Colony at district headquarters, Somanatheshwara Temple at Palakurthy and Ramappa Temple at Palampet in the district.

Serpentine queues witnessed at Thousand Pillar Temple. “It is a rare occasion that New Year and Mukkoti Ekadasi fall on the same day and it augurs well for the people. Devotees had ‘Uttaradwara darshanam’ said the temple main priest G Upendra Sharma.

Marking Mukkoti Ekadasi, Tridandi Srimannarayana Ramanuja Chinna Jeeyar Swamy delivered a special discourse at KDC Grounds in Hanamkonda where a huge number of devotees have attended.

Special midnight services were held at Fatima Cathedral at Kazipet, St Mary’s Church in Hanamkonda and other Roman Catholic Churches commemorating ‘Feast of the Motherhood of Mary’, a celebration dedicated to the mother of Jesus.

Centenary Baptist Church in Hanamkonda, Epiphany Church at Dornakal and various other churches too conducted Special midnight services marking the arrival New Year. Several hotels and private educational institutions at the district headquarters have orgnised special New Year bashes. During midnight hours, people were seen revelling on roads, cutting cakes and cheering the passersby.

District Collector G Kishan and Superintendent of Police Ambar Kishor Jha along with officials participated in New Year celebrations at the Collectorate and at district police headquarters.

Sharing her views with The Hans India on New Year celebrations, Vani Sheela, who is a lecturer at St Peter's Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, expressed grief over extravagance during the celebrations even as lakhs of underprivileged were left to starve.

“According to the media reports, Rs70 crore were spent on liquor alone on December 31st night which is very painful. It is better not to telecast live programmes where people seen consuming alcohol to avoid at least youth get attracted to such habits,” she said.

Teachers and voluntary organisations should come forward to educate students in schools and colleges for having a meaningful and sober celebration on the eve of New Year, the lecturer suggested.
