Warangal: Tension prevailed at the Greater Warangal Municipal Corporation office here on Monday as three women municipal workers, who have been on strike, attempted to commit suicide protesting against the indifferent attitude of the State government towards their demands. The municipal workers, identified as P Shobha, Elisha and Indira, have doused themselves with kerosene in a bid to commit suicide while a demonstration was staged at the corporation office premises in Warangal on Monday.

The incident has caused a shock among the striking workers who expressed anger at the government’s alleged indifferent attitude in fulfilling their demand of minimum wages.


Ramesh and Bhikshapathi speaking to the press persons alleged that even as the strike entered 23rd day on Monday the TRS government was not making any effort to resolve the issue. It was not proper on the part of an elected government to act in such an adamant manner and it should act responsibly, they said.


Meanwhile, the municipal officials have engaged daily wage workers to carry out sanitation works under the corporation limits. This has added further tension to the agitation by the municipal workers. At many places in Hanamkonda the striking municipal workers have stopped the daily wagers from clearing the garbage on the roads. In return the daily wage workers have beaten up the municipal workers and police booked cases against the latter for preventing the sanitation work.
