Hyderabad: Not less than 400 million people are living with viral hepatitis and it kills 1.45 million people each year. World Hepatitis Day will be observed on July 28 to create awareness among people that the disease can be prevented and lives can be saved.


Dr Ch Madhusudhan, Head of the Department, Surgical Gastroenterology, at Osmania General Hospital, said patients affected by the hepatitis would recover fully by securing medical care. Only a small percentage of patients need to undergo liver transplantation, he said.


Chronic infections are said to be responsible for 57 per cent of cases of liver cirrhosis and 78 per cent of cases of primary liver cancer. Regarding Indian scenario, Dr Madhusudhan said, India has over 40 million Hepatitis-B infected patients, second only to China.

Most people with chronic Hepatitis B or C were unaware of their infection, putting them at serious risk of developing cirrhosis or liver cancer which were life threatening World Health Organisation (WHO) has intensified its efforts to support countries in addressing viral hepatitis. The Global Hepatitis Programme was established in 2011 following a World Health Assembly resolution.
