Osmania General Hospital structure can survive for another century with a few repairs

Hyderabad: The Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) inspection report on the structural stability and safety that was released on Friday stated that the Osmania General Hospital (OGH) was structurally safe and could survive for another century if properly maintained.

A team, comprising 14 members who included structural engineers, conservation architects, material scientists and members of INTACH, inspected the building for three days. Headed by Divay Gupta of heritage division, INTACH Delhi and S P Anchuri, architect and engineer, INTACH Hyderabad in the report, said the damage detected were mostly on the surface of the building and could be restored to good condition, the report said.

Osmania General Hospital is a graded II-B heritage building in HMDA listing and is protected under the heritage regulations of HMDA. Sajjad Shahid, co-convenor, INTACH Hyderabad chapter said that the term of the Heritage Conservation Committee lapsed three years ago. But, the government had not reconstituted it, he observed.

The 1,400 bed hospital caters to over eight lakh out-patients and 52,000 in-patients annually had not been maintained for decades. Water seepage from leaking pipes and drains coupled with faulty water proofing on the terrace had resulted in rusting and falling of structural steel at a few places leading to plaster peeling off.

The report also dismissed the JNTU findings as incorrect. The INTACH team had not found evidence to suggest that timber was used as a structural member anywhere in the building and thus there was no possibility of its collapse as claimed by JNTU report.
