Hyderabad: Telangana JAC chairman Prof M Kodandaram on Tuesday demanded that the State government immediately declare its agriculture policy. Kodandaram said he would hold a silent protest on October 2 in front of Mahatma Gandhi statue on the Assembly premises to highlight the government’s apathy towards the farmers’ issues in the State.

The JAC chairman was speaking in the Rythu JAC round-table on ‘Farmers’ Distress, Drought and Crop Loans’ here at Sundarayya Vignana Kendram. He said since the Assembly sessions would be starting from September 20, the government should declare the agriculture policy before the session.

The JAC chairman demanded that the State government release the input subsidy given by the Centre. “The farmers are selling away their cattle as they have no money left. The State government is yet to release the third installment of loan waiver scheme and this resulted in banks not giving loans to the farmers and they are going to private money lenders,” said Kodandaram.

He also demanded that the State government enumerate crop loss and provide financial assistance to farmers. He also wanted the authorities to make changes to the drought manual after taking views of farmers into consideration.

He alleged that farmers were not getting help from the Agriculture Department officials. The JAC would soon handover a memorandum to Chief Secretary Rajiv Sharma on the plight of the farmers in the State. Kodandaram said if the government acquired land for the project, farmers should be given land for land as compensation.
