Hyderabad: Lack of basic facilities at Gandhi Hospital resulted in the death of an accident victim on Monday. Prakash (23), a native of Nalgonda district, had gone to Yadagirigutta temple for darshan on his bike.
While returning to Nalgonda, he fell from his bike and suffered head injury and went into coma. He was taken to Gandhi Hospital. Neurosurgeons advised his family members to get a CT scan done.
The only CT scan at Gandhi hospital was out of order for last five days. They were suggested to get the scan done at Osmania General Hospital.
After the CT scan, the doctors at OGH felt that since the patient was in coma, he should be put on ventilator but the ventilator at OGH was not functioning. Hence, he was sent back to Gandhi Hospital. Prakash died before he could reach Gandhi Hospital.
When contacted the Superintendent of Gandhi Hospital J Venkateshwar Reddy confirmed that Prakash was in coma. He said the neurosurgeons at Gandhi Hospital had examined the patient.
Before they could decide on medical management of the patient, the family members of Prakash took him to another hospital. He said the only CT scan at Gandhi Hospital conducts 80 to 100 tests every day. On account of excessive usage, the scan had gone out of order.
The technical experts from Mumbai had fixed the German-made CT scan on Monday. It was made functional around 8.30 pm.
The hospital had written to the government to provide one more CT scan machine and the issue was pending with the health department, said Venkateshwar Reddy.
Meanwhile, taking cognizance of the incident, the Human Rights Commission (HRC) issued notices to the doctors of Gandhi Hospital and Osmania General Hospital, and also to the Principal Secretary (Medical & Health) and Health Service Government of Telangana and asked them to submit a detailed report by November 10.
