Sangareddy: Medak district on Saturday continued to deal with the bittersweet effects of incessant rains which have left many water bodies overflowing and causing floods by engulfing everything on their path.

Nine gates of Singur Dam were opened releasing 1.5 lakh cusecs of water downstream, putting several villages in its path to risk of submergence. There have been inflows of 2 lakh cusecs on Saturday.

There was storage of 26 tmcft and the water level was 523 metres. According to Jagannatham, DE Irrigation, Pocharam, Minpur and Gongulur in Pulkal mandal, Yellampally in Tekmal mandal and 10 villages in Papannapet mandal risk floods.

Meanwhile, thousands of visitors thronged Singur to witness the water flow. Policemen were stationed in huge numbers to prevent any untoward incident.

Twenty three labourers from Odisha and Madhya Pradesh, who had come to Tekulagadda near Edupayala Durga temple to work on a bridge being constructed there, were stranded on a high-lying area located between the seven branches of Manjeera River (Edupayalu) and were unable to move to a safer location.

A team of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) was sent to rescue them, but due to unfavourable weather conditions they couldn’t carry out the rescue operation.
