Hyderabad: Tougher laws will be introduced and implemented to check road accidents and save the lives of people, particularly the young, said Mayor Bonthu Rammohan.

He was speaking at a programme organised at the Traffic Training Institute (TTI), Goshamahal, as part of Road Safety Week. The Mayor said the GHMC Legal Department would soon unveil the draft report of the proposed act.

The GHMC was also contemplating to bring in law to eliminate menace of footpath encroachment, he said.

He said, “Youth play an important role in the society and we will not remain mute spectators to the loss of young lives in road accidents.

We will strengthen the police department, tougher laws will be introduced and ensure their implementation in a stringent manner,” the Mayor said.

The State government was committed to make Aadhaar mandatory for all services and this would enable the authorities to access the profiles of the citizens when they sought driving licenses, passports, visas or employment, he said.

Speaking on the occasion, Second Metropolitan Magistrate, Anjaneyulu, said that road accidents would come down only when drivers were self-disciplined. However, he said that drink- driving cases had come down as the violators were being awarded shorter periods of prison term.

Joint Commissioner of Transport Panduranga Naik appealed to the parents to ensure that their kids secure driving licence and use helmet before buying them vehicles. He also said accidents were taking place due to lack of discipline among the youth and advised the citizens to follow traffic rules for the safety of all.

Speaking on the occasion, Deputy Commissioner of Police Traffic A V Ranganath said most of the road accidents were taking place because of overspeeding and drink-driving. Road accidents would come down only when each and every citizen followed traffic rules.
