Time to dump old garbage vehicles
Hyderabad: Though several lives are being lost due accidents involving rickety garbage dumping vehicles of GHMC, the civic body does not seem to be taking any serious action. The latest in the list is the accident that took place near Trimulgherry on Thursday night in which four persons died on the spot.
According to highly-placed sources in the corporation, the civic body sanitation wing has been using heavy vehicles to transport garbage from transfer stations, including stations near Imliban, Tank Bund and other places.
Sources said that the civic body has been using nearly 660 heavy vehicles to transfer garbage to dumping yard at Jawaharnagar. The corporation during July last year had identified as many as 279 vehicles which were more than 15 years old and had decided to phase out all old vehicles. But these vehicles are still seen transporting garbage and are proving to be killers on road.
It is also learnt that these drivers do not have badges and the parking yards at Kavadiguda, Khairatabad and Malakpet from where the vehicles are taken out does not have breath analysers. This results in drunken driving putting the lives of citizens at stake. These trucks do not have proper lights and most of the times the breaks fail.
According to sources, the civic body's ground level staff has given the contract to private agencies. These agencies do not own any vehicles. They hire vehicles which are in bad shape from others. This has been not only posing life threat to public but also leaking GHMC's revenue.
When asked about it, a senior GHMC official told The Hans India that there was no system of using the breath analysers at any of the parking yards. Though the GHMC had given clear instructions to the private agencies to follow the norms, the private agencies with an aim to make money in a short period of time have been employing drivers who do not have proper licences, he said.
The GHMC official further said that the corporation has already invited tenders to phase out all the old vehicles. He said that the corporation has decided to hire 140 new vehicles soon.
