Congress mounts pressure on TJS, CPI on seat offer

Hyderabad: The Congress has stepped up the efforts to persuade its alliance partners, Telangana Jana Samithi and Communist Party to be content with the number of seats offered to them.

TPCC president N Uttam Kumar Reddy on Saturday met TJS president Kodandaram, CPI state secretary Chada Venkat Reddy and Telugu Desam Telangana unit president L Ramana at a private resort.

However, the leaders failed to come to an agreement on seat sharing. The Congress leaders said the TJS and the CPI have staking claim for more seats and it remains a bottleneck in conclude an agreement.

The Congress has been offering seven seats to the TJS and three seats to the CPI. The TJS has been seeking 17 seats and the CPI 11 seats. The Congress, according to sources, has found it difficult to concede the demand of the two parties.

Telangana Jana Samithi president Kodandaram met AICC president Rahul Gandhi on Friday in Delhi and complained to him about the attitude of the Telangana Congress. Rahul Gandhi advised them to discuss the issue with the TPCC leaders.

A senior leader of the Congress said the seat-sharing issue of the alliance would be resolved by November 5. He exuded confidence that the TJS and the CPI would agree to the Congress offer. He said the Congress may give one more seat to CPI. if necessary.

The leader made it clear that they have to accept the proposal of the Congress to form the alliance. The TJS president and CPI state secretary have been putting up a brave front and seeking more seats to placate their own party leaders, it is felt.

The leader said that there was pressure on Kodandaram and Venkat Reddy from cadres to seek more seats as they have a good chance of winning them in view of anti-establishment wave in the state.

At the same time the Congress was also firm not to yield to the pressures of the alliance partners and give more seats than they deserve. Party leaders said the TJS and CPI may not win all the seats they contest under alliance agreement. They may end up losing majority of the seats they have been given benefitting the TRS.

The Congress leaders have also been exerting pressure on the TJS prospective candidates to contest on the Congress symbol to ensure that their win is certain. But the TJS leaders rejected the proposal. The TJS leadership argue that their party has strong organisation in 40 constituencies and it has bright chances to win in 15 constituencies.
