Chandanagar: Principal Secretary Arvind Kumar on Wednesday stressed the need for safe and hygienic toilets exclusively for women. Besides roping in women SHGs for operating them, the civic officials should strive to ensure market outreach to women SHGs in Chandanagar circle in the west zone. GHMC took up the toilets in partnership with Hindustan Aeronautical Limited under their CSR (corporate social responsibility) initiative.

Arvind Kumar was speaking after inaugurating ‘She mart and loo’ in Chandanagar circle. They are free to use and exclusively for women. For first time, baby feeding rooms are also being launched, he informed. The official informed that the store will stock eco-friendly, recycled and upscale products manufactured by SHG groups.

“Women most often hesitate to use a public toilet as mostly there will be men sitting there to collect user fees. Also hygiene is a factor. This outlet will have 4 women running the mart making it safe for women to use. Products will be manufactured by women. There will be CC cameras too to ensure security,” the Principal Secretary said.He also launched a compact automated disiltation machine.

It will do away with manual desilitation and the need for persons to get into manholes, which is the current practice across the city. It is small and very useful in slum areas where man holes frequently overflow. It can desilt up to 20 metres depth. At a time it can extract 20 liters of sludge out of manholes.Zonal Commissioner D Harichandana, Deputy Commissioner Yadagiri Rao and others were present.
