Lakdikapul: Telangana union of working journalists (TUWJ) state general secretary K Virahat Ali, along with other journalists, met the state DGP Mahender Reddy and demanded that action be taken against police staff who misbehaved with Andhrajyothi political bureau chief Mendu Srinivas on Monday night at Ramanthapur.

The journalist leaders submitted a memorandum to DGP at his office on Tuesday. They brought to DGP's notice several such incidents where journalists were abused by police.

Virahat Ali said journalists had been playing a key role in controlling spread of Coronavirus by creating awareness on the virus. He condemned the police attack on the senior journalist and expressed dissatisfaction over the police misbehaviour towards journalists who were playing a vital role in spreading awareness on the virus among people. He said that only reporters working in various channels and newspapers have accreditation cards but other journalists working in various departments do not have accreditation cards.

He appealed DGP to provide identity cards to journalists.

Responding to the complaint, DGP Mahender Reddy assured journalist leaders to take necessary action against the police who misbehaved with journalists. Special efforts would be taken to establish coordination between police and journalists, he added. He said that CPRO of each police Commissionerate would provide special passes to journalists who do not have accreditation cards.
