Vijayawada: Orphans should be handed over to their parents and legal adoptions should be encouraged in the state, said Women and Child Welfare Department secretary and special commissioner Arun Kumar.

He addressed a state-level workshop on Tuesday organised for the officers and wardens of social organisations.

Arun Kumar said the people who are seeking for children are showing interest to take adoption and one should encourage them to adopt in legal way.

He recalled that the government has framed certain rules and regulations for the adoption.

If any officer or departmental person deviates from the rules, they will be punished severely. He ordered the officials that the adoptions of the children who crossed 10 years should be based on their interest only.

They kept details of 149 children on the website. He said that the department instructed all the Collectors to conduct reviews for every 3 months about the adoptions in their districts.

Arun Kumar also said that they closed few CCIs which are not having proper infrastructure based on the child welfare regulations with the recommendations of the district committees' reports.
