According to the Puranas, Yamraj's sister Yamuna tried to visit her brother many times, but unfortunately, he was busy and couldn't meet his sister. But after a long time, Yamuna met her brother and on that happy occasion, she greeted her brother offering sweets and applied a ceremonial tikka on his forehead. Thus, Yamraj was immensely happy and blessed his sister. He also gave a boon to Yamuna and she asked him Yamraj to visit her house every year on the same day and thus 'Bhai Dooj' came into the existence. Even Lord Krishna visited his sister Subhadra after defeating the demon Narakasura. Subhadra welcomed her brother with a garland of flowers. She also applied 'tikka' on his forehead and performed aarti. Thus, 'Bhai Dooj' festival has become a tradition.
Happy 'Bhai Dooj' to all the lovely brothers and sisters…
