Kondapur (Ward-104), one of the recently developed areas of the Hyderabad where well facilitated residential welfare colonies have sprung up, is known to be part of the IT corridor.

But the fame of the division ends just there. Residents of many colonies rue that they lack water supply and are facing issues of garbage burning every day. Roads are still being neglected which can be observed in front of AMB mall and the pipeline works are also left incomplete in front of the mall.

Overflowing drain on main roads of Kondapur is taken up with officials several times, but in vain, deplore residents. Due to overflowing sewage, roads have become slippery, causing hardships to motorists, said Karthik, a motorist. "Overflowing the drain is the major issue which we report every time, but no action is taken. We are truly disappointed over official negligence," said Rohit, a resident, Kothagudem.

Residents allege that work on the drain stopped almost midway.. Shyam Kumar, a social activist, said, "Sewerage water has been flowing onto the road for the past week, and nobody is paying any heed to our request. While the water pipeline has been fixed, the drainage pipeline continues to overflow, causing water to stagnate in this prime location."

Several techies from Kothaguda use this road to reach their workplace every day and on weekdays, traffic snarls are common during rush hours. The overflow of sewage onto the main road only worsens the situation.

Garbage burning is leading to emission of toxic gases in the air, such as nitrogen oxide, methane, sulphur dioxide, carbon monoxide and carcinogenic hydrocarbons, said Abhay Joshi, a social activist. Change will be seen, if GHMC tries to implement the rules and slaps fines for violations, takes up campaigns for awareness on littering, opined Michael, a techie from Kondapur.

WHO ARE IN THE FRAY?

Shaik Hameed from TRS (Incumbent), M Raghunath from BJP, Siraj from TDP, Gangala Mahipal Yadav from INC and Maimidi Srisailam Goud from CPI are in the fray. Sheik Sajeeda Bagum, Haris Sagar and Durga Prasad are contesting independently.
