Jagannath Rath Yatra Begins After Supreme Court Nod
The Jagannath Rath Yatra began in Puri as scheduled on Tuesday, following a nod from the Supreme Court imposing certain conditions.
Puri: The Jagannath Rath Yatra began in Puri as scheduled on Tuesday, following a nod from the Supreme Court imposing certain conditions. The apex court on Monday heard petitions on behalf of the Centre, the Odisha government and the temple committee among others requesting it to review its June 18 stay order on the Rath yatra.
The Supreme Court on Monday directed the Odisha government to ensure that the Rath yatra is held without mass congregation. The Supreme Court took note of the Odisha government's assurance that the Ratha Yatra would be held without public attendance. The apex court also directed the Odisha government to ensure that all the 1,500 men involved in pulling the sacred chariots (500 per chariot) are tested for coronavirus.
Accordingly, all entry points to Puri were sealed to ensure that Coronavirus guidelines are maintained, and social distancing rules adhered to. Security has been tightened and CCTV cameras installed. The authorities also took care to ensure that public gathering was not allowed.
The Jagannath Rath Yatra began on Tuesday morning with the Aarti ritual of the Holy Trinity of Lord Jagannath's 'Nandi Ghosh', Lord Balabhadra's 'Taladwaja' and Devi Subhadra's 'Darpadalan'. The Aarti was followed by other rituals. The Aarti was followed by other rituals.
