Kakinada: The 69th Republic Day celebrations were held on a grand note here on Friday. Patriotic fervor marked the festivities as the Police Parade Grounds hosted the Republic Day celebrations. District Collector Kartikeya Mishra hoisted the national flag.

Later, Mishra inspected the guard of honour from the Police, Special Police and Armed Reserve Platoon and from the NCC cadets. The Collector felicitated a 90-year-old freedom-fighter, Chodipalli Hanumantha Rao in the celebrations.

Speaking on the occasion, he listed out different welfare programmes of the government. He claimed that the district stood second for the disbursal of pensions in the state. He informed that the government had sanctioned 2,000 more pensions to each constituency in the district.

“A total of 38,000 new pensions were sanctioned in the district. Every month, the government is paying 53.48 crore as pensions in the district alone. East Godavari stood first in the state by joining 27.03 lakh people in Chandranna Bima Padhakam. A total of Rs 54 crore has been deposited to the accounts of the nominees under this scheme,” he added.

Mishra informed that another bridge on Upputeru would be constructed soon which connects Kakinada Port to the NH-216. A total of 15 tableaus were displayed during the celebrations. The tableaus of Civil Supplies, Andhra Pradesh Rural Inclusive Growth Project and BC Corporation won the prizes. The collector’s rolling shields were won by the DWMA, School Education and DRDA departments respectively.

A total of 283 employees including six district-level officers received the commendation certificates from the Collector. Joint Collector Mallikarjuna, Trainee Collector Anand, Superintendent of Police Vishal Gunni, DFO Nandini Salaria and other officials participated in the celebrations.
