Tirupati: A woman, Martha alias Lalitha, from Arakkonam in Tamil Nadu, was sentenced to two-month simple imprisonment by a court here for allegedly indulging in other religious propaganda in Tirumala. Second Additional Judicial First Class Magistrate Leelavenkata SeshadrI gave the judgment after she pleaded guilty on Monday.

According to the prosecution, Martha, carrying a Bible, glorified her religion and ridiculed the Hindu faith in Tirumala on September 18. The TTD Vigilance personnel, who found her propagating other religion, had taken her into custody and handed her over to Tirumala Two Town police.

The police registered a case under Section 3 of the AP Propagation of Other Religion in Places of Worship or Prayers (Prohibition) Act, 2007, against Martha. They produced her in court. The case is said to be the first of its kind, wherein a person has been punished for propagation of other religion in a place of worship.
