Anantapur: Civil Supplies Minister Paritala Sunitha on Saturday asked the district administration to get ready for saving the groundnut crop during the next Kharif. She urged the groundnut farmers to join hands in building one lakh farm ponds across the district by next Kharif season.

Sunitha was speaking after showing the use of rain guns to farmers at Narasampalli village in Kanaganapalli mandal, along with the Jain Company officials. Addressing a gathering, the minister asserted that the government was taking all steps to save the groundnut crop in the district. The rain gun system has been found to be useful, she quoted the farmers as having told her.

She asked the farmers to go in for the construction of farm ponds in their respective fields so as to pave the way for not only to store groundwater, but also to save the groundnut crop during drought.

The minister pointed out that normally groundnut crop was raised in seven lakh hectares across Anantapur district. Farmers opting for the crop had suffered during the last 11 years because of deficit rainfall.

Keeping this in view Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu had asked the district administration , besides the State agriculture/horticulture department officials , to evolve special alternative strategies to save groundnut crop. As part of these efforts, Naidu had seen the use of rain gun system in the district, Sunitha stated.

DWMA project director Venkateswarlu, Market Fed district manager Bala Bhaskar, representatives of Jain Company and a large number of local farmers were present.
