Srikakulam: Sex determination tests are going on unabated at private scanning centres across Srikakulam district and neighbouring Odisha State. Registered Medical Practitioners (RMPs) and Private Medical Practitioners (PMPs) are playing a key role in conducting the tests at private scanning centres in Srikakulam, Sompeta, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, Berhampur, Parlakimidi and Rayagada in Odisha.
RMPs and PMPs in Srikakulam, Amudalavalasa, Palasa towns, Laveru, Ponduru and other mandals are taking pregnant women to Visakhapatnam, Parlakimidi, Bilaspur, Rayagada and Berhampur and collecting Rs 20,000 for sex determination tests.

The RMPs and PMPs are providing illegal business to doctors of private hospitals. Women from Srikakulam are paying Rs 12,000 to Rs 15,000 for sex determination tests. If the baby is female, pregnant women are joining private maternity hospitals near Day and Night Junction in Srikakulam town through brokers for abortion and gynaecologists are collecting Rs 10,000 for abortions.

Medical and health department officials are turning a blind eye in preventing the sex determination tests under the Pre-conception and Pre-natal Determination of Sex (PCPNDTS) Act -1994. According to private doctors and medical officers, about 7,000 abortions were conducted from January 2010 to November 2015, but no case was booked under PCPNDTS Act.
