Solar pump sets for poor farmers

Nellore: Meenakshi Energy Private Limited (MEPL)-GDF Suez handed over a cheque amounting to Rs 38.5 lakh to District Collector M Janaki here on Friday for supporting the programme of providing solar pump sets to poor farmers from SC/ST communities as part of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative.

Solar pump sets of five star rating will be given to farmers of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes to fetch water from the successfully drilled borewells which have not yet been put to use under the NTR Jalasiri programme for sustainable development in rural areas of the district.

MEPL-GDF Suez Chief Operating Officer (CEO) Jamil Amin said that the company had come forward to implement the solar initiative under its CSR for promoting renewable energy to reduce adverse impact on environment. To start with, two solar pump sets worth Rs 7.3 lakh will be distributed to eight farmers for irrigating 10 acres of land at Dumpavaripalli in Thirumalapuram Gram Panchayat under the pilot project.

The MEPL official said that they had decided to supply 121 solar pump sets in two phases. The company had entered into a MoU with the District Water Management Agency (DWMA) and New and Renewable Energy Development Corporation of Andhra Pradesh (NREDCAP) for implementation of the initiative within the stipulated time. Amin said that Rs 38.5 lakh is towards for successful commissioning of the 70 solar pump sets and the remaining amount of Rs 28.5 lakh will be handed over to district officials to distribute solar pump sets for 51 beneficiaries.
