Indrakeeladri turns a sea of Bhavanis

Vijayawada: All roads leading to Sri Durga Mallleswara Swamy Varla Devasthanam, atop the Indrakeeladri here on Sunday, presented festive look as the Bhavani devotees trooped into the city from far off places to relinquish their 21-day (or 41-day) ‘Bhavani Deeksha on the fourth consecutive day.

The large turnout of Bhavani deeksha devotees at the bathing ghat of the Krishna for relinquishing the deeksha with a dip in the river presented a picture of a ‘red sea’ of humanity. All the devotees turned up in their traditional red robes. The devotees included a good number of women too. After tonsuring their heads near the bathing ghat, most of the devotees took a dip or had a shower at the Bhavani Ghat.

At the temple, long queues were witnessed from the morning, but the crowd grew in numbers as the day progressed. By afternoon, thousands of devotees, women, children and men took a holy bath at the Durga ghat and went up the hill to have a darshan of the goddess.

The vicinity of Indrakeeladri reverberated with chants and slogans, ‘Bhavani Mata Ki Jai’, ‘Jai Bhavani Jai Jai Bhavani' as Bhavanis stormed in large numbers to relinquish their deeksha.

Speaking on the occasion, Temple Executive Officer Ch Narasing Rao said that the 41-day Bhavani Deeksha Viraman would come to an end on Monday with performance of ‘Poornahuti in the specially designed and built ‘homa gundam’ used by the devotees to deposit their ‘Irumudi’.

It was estimated that about 80,000 devotees visited the temple on Sunday. The temple received an income of Rs 40 lakh through sale of prasadam and tickets on the fourth day of deeksha viramana, he said.
