Ragging:Andhra Universit vice-chancellor warns of expulsion

Visakhapatnam: Andhra University vice-chancellor Prof G Nageswara Rao warned the students that the varsity would not hesitate to expel them from the campus, if they were found involved in ragging incidents.

Addressing an awareness meet on ‘Ragging and its Implications’ in the AU Convocation Hall, the vice-chancellor said AU has been taking lot of measures to make the campus free from ragging and other undesirable activities.

We will not spare even a minor ragging incident. The varsity had already established a six-level committee, making right from vice-chancellor, principals, professors, senior students and wardens part of the committee,” said Prof. Nageswara Rao.

Earlier, the students and faculty of the varsity took out a huge rally on the campus with placards detailing the perils of ragging.
Explaining the consequences of ragging, Joint Commissioner of Police, AS Khan, said ragging is equivalent to a serious crime.

It can prove to be a traumatic and a lifelong harrowing experience for the victims. Students should be aware of the negative forces surrounding them,” he added.

Secretary of the District Legal Services Authority and Senior Civil Judge, District Court, RV Naga Sundar, stressed the need of creating awareness among the students about the legal punishments for ragging.

Students narrated several ragging incidents which forced the brilliant students to end their lives.Registrar Prof. V. Umamaheswara Rao, Prof. M. Prasada Rao and others were present.
