Vijayawada: Trading activity was crippled in the city, which is known as Commercial Capital of Andhra Pradesh, due to traffic restrictions imposed by police for the Krishna Pushkaralu. No-vehicle zone is the most important problem being faced by the traders in the city.

More than 90 per cent of the wholesale shops in the city are located at I town from Canal Road to Ramanaiah cold drinks junction and Tarapet area near railway station. Police are strictly implementing the no-vehicle zone in these areas. Consequently, the trading activity was hit in the Old City for the past one week.

Wholesale shops related to electrical goods, construction material, plastic goods, stationery items, paper bags, paper glasses, ceramic products, electronic goods and grocery items, dry fruit shops are located at Samarangam Chowk area. Besides, Vastralatha textile wholesale market is also located at I town area.

Business transactions crippled in these shops due to lack of buyers, who are not in a position to go to the shops, due to restrictions implemented by police.

Retail traders from other parts of the State purchase the goods from these wholesalers. Due to traffic restrictions, the hamalis are not able to carry out loading and unloading activity for the past one week.

All big vehicles have been stopped on the outskirts of the city since August 11. Goods vehicles will not be allowed into the city another one week. So, the wholesale traders can’t get goods from other areas.

Hundreds of hamalis lost their livelihood for one week and it will continue for six more days. K Sudheer, a wholesale building material trader, said the buyers are not coming to the shops due to traffic curbs. He said many shops were already demolished at Tarapeta due to road widening works and now Pushkaralu have further affected their livelihood.

Similarly, mobile business, electronics business at NTR Complex also crippled for one week due to lack of buyers. S Bose, a mobile phones trader, said plying of RTC buses from Satellite bus stations, railway station to Pushkara ghats and operating buses from the Pushkar ghats to stations causing big loss to the traders.

He said the pilgrims are alighting at Satellite stations and going directly to the Pushkar ghats by buses for taking a holy dip and finally returning to their places without going around the city.

He said the pilgrims can visit some parts of the city if the police lift the restrictions and it will increase the trading activity. Trading activity on Eluru road, MG Road and Beasant Road also badly affected due to lack of buyers.
