The cash-strapped Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) will have a director revenue for each of its 15 divisions. Until now, P S Suryanarayana, director (Revenue), has been looking after all the divisions. The decision to have a director for each of the divisions comes after a high-level meeting with Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao. A senior official of HMWS&SB said that the chief minister was keen onincreasing the revenues.

The Water Board has an operational deficit of Rs 2 crore every month. The power bills dues have gone up to Rs 120 crore in the last two years. The orders have been issued and directors in each of the divisions have been given targets. The Water Board spends Rs 90 crore–Rs 100 crore per month towards payment of power bills, salaries and water supply and sewerage projects.

Suryanarayana said, “The focus now will be on recovering the dues from customers. Various government institutions owe the Water Board Rs 300 crore and non-government customers Rs 700 crore.” In the coming days, with the commissioning of 45 MGD through Krishna Phase III, the power bills would shoot up by Rs 3 crore per month. The board is spending Rs 44 crore per month since July since the initial 45 MGD was commissioned.

The board is expecting 172 MGD from the Godavari Phase I. Senior officials say that the power bills may go up to Rs 80 crore per month. With 217 MGD of water to be added to in the next few months from the Krishna Phase III and Godavari Phase I, the Water Board’s power bills would rise phenomenally. “Unless illegal connections are plugged, dues collected, leakages cut and overall efficiency does not improve, the board may have to suffer huge losses, “opined a senior official.
