Hyderabad: Residents of Uday Nagar in Gowri Shanker Nagar Colony are keeping their fingers crossed at the impending threat posed by an unfenced open nala in their midst, which has seen a spate of non-fatal accidents.

Since the congested narrow road abutting the unfenced nala has become busy as it is being used more often by vehicle-users, the possibility of a tragedy during rainy season is very high. Locals said that the open nala is an invitation to disaster.

Several representations made to the civic body, the area Corporator and even the Khairatabad MLA in whose constituency this area falls, have fallen on deaf ears and the issue remains neglected for the past several months.

Strangely, the nala is just 50 metres away from Tourism Minister Azmeera Chandulal’s residence at Minister’s Quarters. P Sanjay, a resident of Uday Nagar slums, said that despite registering several complaints with the civic body, no action was initiated. He claimed that residents did not get a positive response from Khairatabad BJP MLA Chintala Ramachandra Reddy when he was approached.

“A group of residents and our Corporator P Vijaya Reddy briefed our MLA in order to resolve the issue, but he was not forthcoming to help us", Sanjay said. Residents said that the number of mishaps in the area was on the rise and they now feared for the safety of their children whenever they were playing along the unfenced open nala.

Every week, either a cyclist or a moped rider trips and falls into the eight-foot nala, they claimed. A 20-year-old pushcart vendor S Pankaj said that he had skidded off his moped and fell into the open nala last week. He thanked his stars as the flow of water in it was not “aggressive”.

Residents helped him out within minutes. “If the nala was flowing to its full capacity, the current would have easily drowned me,” he said. Responding to queries on the issue, a senior GHMC official claimed that fencing of this open nala was included in the recent 100-day action plan. “We will carry out fencing works here very soon,” he said.
