Media and people berated the Delhi police for lack of policewomen and cited it as one of the reasons for increase in violence against women. Despite growing cases of crime against women, the subsequent governments have failed to open women’s police stations or deploy women police personnel in the city. It is mandated by law that a woman officer has to be present while recording a statement by women complainants.

There are about 40 lakh women in the city while the corresponding women police personnel are only 412. Ironically, the total population of policewomen in both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana is anywhere between 2,100- 2,200, less than the given average and even less than two per cent of its total police personnel deployed in the two states. This is an alarming trend as even a state like Uttar Pradesh has more than 2,800 women cops.

According to statistics with the police, on an average five cases of harassment, molestation and assault against women have been filed at police stations in the city, every day. In the twin Commissionerates there are 108 law and order stations and only four women stations and the number of women police stations in India is 499.

Of this, the largest number of all women police stations (196) is in Tamil Nadu, followed by 71 in Uttar Pradesh, 40 in Bihar, 32 in Andhra Pradesh, 31 in Gujarat and 29 in Rajasthan.

Due to severe shortage of women police personnel, there has been undue delay in clearing cases and hundreds of cases are pending. According to the rules, every women station should have five women constables, two men constables, one ASI, but not a single police station in the city has these many personnel.

Even the inspectors in Women Cell in Hyderabad Commisssionerate are men. There are 12,438 police personnel in the commisonerate of which only 258 are women. Cyberabad Commissionerate cuts a sorry figure with 154 women personnel.

In an incident in Kukatpally area, the accused wasn’t taken into custody for two days due to lack of women police.

Even in dowry harassment cases it takes four to five days for the police to issue summons.

It is learnt that there are 2,300 posts vacant in the city though in the twin commissionerates, the work is being done by employing home guards.
