Hyderabad: GHMC and Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium, Uppal, seem to be locked in a major controversy over the issue of paying property and other related taxes. A team from the revenue wing of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) knocked on the doors of the Stadium on Saturday to seal the venue for non-payment of property and other taxes.

  • GHMC gives time till tomorrow to pay dues
  • HCA contends stadium is on govt land, and hence no need

Ramani, Deputy Commissioner, East Zone, said: “The taxes have mounted to Rs 12 crore over the years. A number of notices were issued but to no avail. So we had to take the decision.” The GHMC along with IALA (Industrial Area Local Authorities) staff attached three chairs of the president, the vice-president and the secretary of Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) and gave them time till Monday to pay up the dues.

Raghu Prasad, zonal commissioner, East Zone, said that the GHMC has 35 per cent share in the tax and the property belongs to IALA. HCA officials, however, say that it is government land and as a sports venue they have never paid tax. John Manoj, Secretary, HCA, said, “we depend on BCCI for funds and do not let out the stadium for commercial purpose.

I came to know about the taxes only last week. It has come as a shock.” Even as the GHMC officials descended on the stadium, the HCA officials were busy seeing off their president Arshad Ayub who has been appointed as the manager to the Indian team.
