The BHEL Township is a major industrial suburb located at Ramachandrapuram. Nearly 5,500 employees and 4,500 contract staff are residents in the 2,000 acres township. The township came into existence after the setting up of the Indian public sector engineering company Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) in 1964. It was inaugurated by the then Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Sastry.

The township came into existence after the setting up of the Indian public sector engineering company Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) in 1964. It was inaugurated by the then Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Sastry.

The township is well known for its neat and clean roads and its factory that is located on a lush green campus. It is dotted with shops, schools, colleges, hospitals, the State Bank of Hyderabad (estd in 1964) with eight ATMs, many parks, temples, mosques, churches, sports complex, play grounds, swimming pool tennis, badminton, basketball, and volleyball courts and a community hall centre. Many peacocks can be spotted here.

The nearest local and MMTS train station is Lingampally, which is 3 km away. The Secunderabad Railway Station is 27 km away, and the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport is 42 km away from the township. The RTC runs the city bus service connecting it to all major centres of the city.

N Venkateshar Rai, senior deputy general manager, BHEL, said, “The Ramachandrapuram unit started its operations with the manufacture of turbo-generator sets and auxiliaries for 60 and 110 MW thermal utility sets. Today, a wide range of products are manufactured in this unit, catering to the needs of variety of industries like fertilisers and chemicals, petrochemicals and refineries , paper, sugar, steel, etc. This unit has collaborations with world renowned MNCs like General Electric, USA; Siemens, Germany; Nuovo Pignone, etc.”

Problems

Retired employees complained that the sport facilities are pathetic in comparison with the other government maintained areas such as DRDO, NFC, etc. staff quarters need renovation work. Also, water supply is a problem in certain quarters which needs to be fixed by the management.
