The earthquake hit at 8:12 a.m. less than a mile from the town of Carmen in Bohol province in a remote region across the Cebu Strait about 40 miles from Cebu City. Sources said at least two aftershocks rated at magnitude 5.0 or greater.
Two buildings in Cebu City collapsed, as did the roof of a mall under construction, According to the sources. Part of Cebu Doctor University collapsed, the newspaper reported, and the bell tower of the Basilica Del Santo Niño was destroyed. Many incidents such as toppling of Loboc Church in Bohol took place due to the strong earthquake.
Edgar Chatto, governer of Bohol province said media that forces are on job to rescue the victims. He said , "Even now as we are talking, there is an aftershock". He further said the media, "We are trying to explain to the public that the area is surrounded by several islands"
