Vijayawada: Officials of the Krishna Irrigation Department have released 1,000 cusecs of water to the canals and tanks in Krishna and West Godavari districts for drinking water needs and 500 cusecs to Guntur district for irrigation needs on Wednesday night.

People in Pedana and Kaikaluru areas have been facing severe drinking water scarcity. Some other parts of the district too are facing the problem though at a lesser intensity.A The legislators of the district represented to the Chief Minister to release water from Nagarjuna Sagar to tide over the drinking water crisis.

The State government had released water from Nagarjuna Sagar four days ago though the water level was a little above the minimum drawing water level. The Krishna district irrigation officials have alerted the Rural Water Supply (RWS) Department and other local body officials of the Krishna delta about the release of water.

The RWS Department has notified nearly 360 tanks in Krishna district and more number of small tanks in various parts of the Krishna delta.The officials said that they would continue to supply water for another 15 days. He asked the people to fill the tanks for use in summer. He said water would not be released till coming Kharif season after the present 15 days period.
